Investing in Growth. Creating Jobs in the Baltimore Region.
The Baltimore Fund is the largest investor in TRF Private Equity's Urban Growth Partners (UGP) fund, representing $15 million of the fund’s $48.5 million in committed capital.
The Baltimore Fund was formed by the Open Society Institute (founded by George Soros) and The Annie E. Casey Foundation, both of which committed $5 million, matched by a total of $5 million in commitments from Deutsche Bank, Johns Hopkins University, and a group of innovative family-sponsored foundations and other investors whose missions are to support economic development in the Baltimore area. These investors include: The Jacob and Hilda Blaustein Foundation, France-Merrick Foundation, The Morris Goldseker Foundation, The Aaron and Lillie Strauss, The Zanvyl and Isabelle Krieger Foundation and The Alvin and Fanny B. Thalheimer Foundation.
As investors in UGP, The Baltimore Fund brings the focus of UGP’s investment strategy and commitment to workforce development to the Baltimore area. At the same time the Baltimore investors benefit from participation in a more broadly diversified pool of investments and a more experienced management team than might have been assembled as a smaller independent fund focused exclusively on Baltimore.
UGP will invest a minimum of $15 million in firms within the Baltimore region, including the City of Baltimore and the five county surrounding region. The Baltimore Fund is also represented by two members on UGP’s board and investment committee. In addition to the dedicated staff, The Baltimore Fund has organized an advisory board of leading investment professionals, workforce development experts and business people to help market the fund and provide advice or contacts related to investment prospects or portfolio firms.
